Horsehead and Flame Nebulae

Be sure to click the image to see the detail. Troy took this spectacular image of the Horsehead and Flame nebulae in the constellation Orion. Both are part of the Orion Molecular Cloud Complex, a star-forming region. The Horsehead nebula was first recorded in 1888 by Scottish astronomer Williamina Fleming on a photographic plate taken at the Harvard College Observatory. Tech Details: Taken 20 January 2021; Williams Optics 98 mm triplet lens; Canon m50 mirrorless camera; Orion 60-mm guide scope; QHY511 guide scope; Celestron AVX mount. Deep Sky Stacker stacking; processed in photo editor and PhotoShop Express; 60 120-second exposures; 10 dark frames; 10 bias frames.

Rappahannock Astronomy Club

The latest newsletter is now available. Just click the newspaper icon on this page. Our restricted lifestyle these days has allowed us to learn some new things and then write about them. This issue includes articles by Myron Wasiuta and Scott Busby on their work on the Atlas comet and globular clusters, respectively. Ron Henke tells about his latest gadget, StarSense Autoalign, and Bart and Linda Billard have written about images of black holes, a new instrument at the telescope complex in Hawaii, and the new planetarium at UVA. Enjoy!
