This issue is a bit of a “travelogue,” with articles by Jerry Hubbell and Ron Henke. Jerry describes all the places he’s traveled in last few months to star parties out West, as well as a vacation visit to Arizona to see, among other things, Meteor Crater. Ron talks about his Arizona astronomy club’s facilities, including a VERY dark site. There are also articles on the “music of the stars,” Moon features, and a review of Einstein’s Telescope.

Special Event: “Night in Washington’s Day,” November 12
George Washington’s Ferry Farm, Saturday, November 12: 6:00 p.m.–9:00 p.m. Come join us at Ferry Farm to learn about the history in the night sky through the constellation stories known to George Washington and other early Americans. Witness a theater scene depicting Revolutionary War soldiers by their campfire. Discover how early Americans used lanterns, candles, and other ingenious lighting technology to banish the dark. Weather permitting, RAC will offer stargazing opportunities for children and adults. Other children’s activities will include making a paper-bag “tin punch” luminary or their own constellation, and everyone can enjoy a campfire and roasted marshmallows. Star Party at Stratford Hall October 8 – CANCELLED
Owing to the predicted effects of Hurricane Matthew, the Stratord Hall Star Party is CANCELLED. There will be Stratford Hall star party on May 6-7, 2017.
Come join RAClub at Stratford Hall for a twilight and nighttime star gazing opportunity on the Oval at Stratford Hall. Beginning at about 6:00 p.m. on the Oval in front of the Great House, we will offer informal discussion on telescopes and the basics of astronomy. Observations, and as darkness descends, star and planet gazing will follow.
Sky Party at Pratt Park September 10 – Join Us!
Sept 10–Join RAClub at Pratt Park TONIGHT to explore the night sky with telescopes, binoculars, and the naked eye. The Moon, Venus, Mars, and Saturn should be visible. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Participants are encouraged to bring a lawn chair.
